1. Starting With Pinterest Instead of a Plan

Pinterest, Instagram, Houzz, and design magazines are great places to gather inspiration. But inspiration isn’t a remodeling plan.

It’s easy to fall in love with a beautiful kitchen or bathroom without considering whether those materials, proportions, layout, or features make sense for your home.

Before choosing finishes, start with the bigger questions:

• What isn’t working about your home today?
• How do you want the space to function?
• What problems are you trying to solve?
• How long do you plan to live in the home?
• What spaces need to connect better?
• What are your must-haves versus nice-to-haves?

Your remodel should be designed around how you live, not simply how you want your home to look.

2. Getting a Price Before You Know What You’re Building

One of the most common questions homeowners ask is, “How much will my remodel cost?”

It’s an important question—but it’s difficult to answer accurately before the scope is understood.

A kitchen remodel could mean new cabinets and countertops, or it could mean moving walls, relocating plumbing, upgrading electrical, adding windows, improving ventilation, and completely reconfiguring the floor plan.

For larger projects, we often recommend beginning the conversation a year or more before you want construction to begin.

Starting early gives you something incredibly valuable: time.

5. Making Too Many Decisions Mid-Project

“I’ll decide when we get there.”

It’s understandable. Remodeling can feel overwhelming, and sometimes homeowners want to see the space before making a final decision.

But decisions made during construction can create a ripple effect.

Changing a tile selection may affect ordering. Moving a light fixture may affect electrical work. Changing cabinetry after it has been ordered can create significant delays and costs.

Good planning doesn’t mean every single decision has to be made immediately. It means the important decisions are made before they become construction problems.

6. Forgetting About the Unseen Parts of the Home

The finishes are often the most exciting part of a remodel.

But some of the most important decisions happen behind the walls.

8. Ignoring How You’ll Live During Construction

This is especially important for larger remodels.

Where will you cook? Where will you shower? Where will you do laundry? Do you have pets? Children? Will you need temporary housing?

And then there’s the dust.

Construction can be disruptive, but thoughtful planning and jobsite practices can make a significant difference.

Before construction begins, talk through what daily life will look like during the project—and what your remodeling team does to control dust, protect your home, and communicate what’s happening.

9. Focusing Only on the Room You’re Remodeling

A remodeling project doesn’t always need to stay inside the four walls you’re starting with.

Sometimes improving one space reveals an opportunity to solve a larger problem.

A kitchen may function better if the adjacent pantry is redesigned. A mudroom may become more useful with better access to the garage. A cramped main level may need a small structural change to completely transform the way the home flows.

This doesn’t mean you should expand the scope of every project.

It means you should look at the home as a whole before deciding where the boundaries of the remodel should be.

Sometimes the best solution is smaller than you expected. Sometimes it’s bigger.
